5 Title Mistakes that are Killing your Product Listing

The key to a good amazon product listing is multidimensional. You have to consider what the customer wants, how amazon prefers titles to be, which products will rank better and the like. To increase your amazon sales, avoid these common title mistakes.

Making a Too Long or Too Short Title

According to Content 26, a perfect product title consists of no more than 80 characters because they make it much simpler for customers to find products.

A shorter title will likely exclude key details about the product's features and functionalities. A title that's too long will confuse the customer with too much information. Product titles that are more than 200 characters will get Amazon's attention and will likely result in a penalty.

Mentioning Any Brand Name

Amazon has explicitly stated that Amazon sellers should not mention other brands' names in their titles. It's unethical and can get you in serious hot waters with Amazon.

On the other hand, sharing your own brand name is discouraged, as well, even though it is a common practice. Only do so if you truly believe that mentioning your name will help your customers, make your product more discoverable on amazon or improve your product page in any other way.

Writing a Description Instead of a Title

This links to what I've said in mistake #1. Longer product titles tend to be descriptive, instead of being concise and accurate. In other words, they focus more on what the product does, instead of what the product is.

Consider this title for Argan oil: "

  • oz Vitamin C Serum - Facelift in a Bottle #1 - 100% Vegan Anti Aging Facial Serum - SEE RESULTS OR MONEY-BACK - Big 2 ounce (Twice the Size) with the Same Premium Ingredients
."

Not only it is overly optimized with keywords, it mentions information one should only include in the product description, like claims. With these kinds of titles, one loses credibility with customers.

Including Sales Messages

While using sales messages and offering discount coupons is a great promotional strategy that attracts customers readily, this information shouldn't be in the title.

According to Repricer Express, if you include such information in the title, Amazon will delete it because it does not directly relate to the description of your product. Nevertheless, promotional offers need to be communicated to customers on the product page. You can use them in your descriptions or details and vigorously advertised on personal websites and social media.

Not reading Amazon's Guidelines

Neglecting to read guidelines provided by Amazon is a mistake a surprisingly large number of sellers commit when they sell on amazon. The marketplace has listed down some procedures that tell sellers how they should style their product pages. Here a few pointers:

  • Do not use all caps.
  • Use numerals, instead of words. ('5, not 'five').
  • Do not use symbols (like !, #, @)
  • Follow the official formatting guidelines.
  • Do not use abbreviations for measurements ('inch', not 'in.')
